Nightmare #201 – a Scissor Murder Escape

(Female, 40’s) This dream was so weird– so strange and violent– that I really don’t know what to make of it.

“…I saw nothing that I could use to kill the man…”

It started out that I was hiding with another woman in a closet-like space. There was a panel near the floor that opened into a hallway. We were being very quiet, cowering in the corner, as far as possible away from the opening. We could hear running in the hallway, men in boots, like soldiers maybe, the clank of guns. When it quieted down, we tried to peek out, but we were seen. We scrambled back into the dark corners of the little room while men hustled to the opening and started reaching in with their arms, trying to grab at us. There was cart coming down the hall so they had to move back. Then they were called away, so they left us.

We looked out again and saw two of our friends, sneaking down the now-empty hallway. We scurried out and joined them, sliding along the walls, eyes darting around. We came to a room, with two glass doors, so we went in, locking the doors behind us. This area appeared to be a sound studio or something like that. We thought we were safe because the doors were locked, but we were wrong.

We went down the hallway and found that the room opened up into a large warehouse. A line of soldiers were pointing guns at me, as a large man advanced toward me. I knew that in order to escape, I had to kill him. He grabbed at me and I ran behind him, jumping up on his back and trying to strangle him. I needed a knife. I looked over at a table top, which was covered with the contents of someone’s junk drawer (which looked much like my junk drawer in the kitchen)– rubber bands, twistie ties, batteries, a bent spoon, shoe laces, an odd cheese knife– and saw nothing that I could use to kill the man.

Then I saw a pair of sheers with an orange plastic handle, much like the sheers we own. I could slit his throat with the sheers, I knew. I couldn’t watch what I was about to do– in fact, I think I closed my eyes in my dream! I opened the sheers and drew the edge of the blade across the man’s throat. I knew it would take several strokes to kill him. With my eyes shut tight, I could feel the blood leaking from his neck. My hands were covered with warm sticky blood. It was awful, but I knew it was my only way out.

Nightmare # 200 – Sewers

(Female, 30’s) This dream probably reveals too much about the things that disturb and scare ME!

In my dream, I was scrubbing a shiny white toilet with a cheap little brush, a flimsy stick with a blue and white ball of netting on the end. (A dream about cleaning a toilet– how totally WEIRD is that??) As I finished and tapped the brush on the edge of the bowl, I flushed at the same time– and then the cheap little brush came apart, and the cleaning part started to get sucked down the drain! I didn’t want the toilet to get clogged, but I didn’t really want to stick my hand in the water either.

I worried about deadly fumes– I didn’t smell anything but that didn’t mean it wasn’t dangerous to my health.

Then I remembered that we had access to something like the water exit chamber (??) of the house, so I could get the broken brush ball out of there! I walked into a utility room where there was a small white door with a strong spring hinge that opened to a sort of chamber where all the drains in the house emptied. (I have no idea where this image came from! Completely imaginary view of plumbing!) The chamber was stark white, very clean and with a big cone-shaped impression in the bottom where all of the waste water drained. It was so clean and smooth and shiny in there. I could see the blue cleaning ball a little way inside, just out of reach. So I got a broom handle and tried to hold the spring door open with one hand while reaching for the ball with the stick with the other hand. I worried about deadly fumes– I didn’t smell anything but that didn’t mean it wasn’t dangerous to my health.

As I leaned in further, I could see the edge of a storage box, just around a corner. How the heck did that get in here? Did someone accidentally flush that down the toilet? As I was reaching and looking, I was slowly climbing inside that chamber. I crawled in far enough to see around the corner, where I found a stack of 6 or 8 storage boxes. We must have put them in here; what had we been thinking? Were we that desperate for storage space?!? I was getting a little panicky at this point, but I looked up and noticed that the ceiling opened to the sky. I could stand up in one spot, and I could put my head and shoulders through the opening. It was sunny and bright outside, and I drew a deep breath of fresh air and felt an enormous relief. Then I started to worry about how I was going to get out of there!

Nightmare #199 – Deadly Eavesdropping

(Female, 80’s) I’ve been on some pretty serious medication recently. The injections just make me feel so light, like I’m floating. It takes a couple days until I come back to myself.

I tried to tell her I wasn’t dead

In this dream, I was laying in my recliner, rocking back and forth. Since I got sick I have been sleeping in my recliner because it’s easier for me to get up out of it than out of a bed. I gradually realized that I could hear voices. The voices were loud enough that I could make out what they were saying. I was very curious. One of the voices was one of the preachers from my church. She was talking about someone who had passed away. “She was just sitting there rocking away in her recliner.” I felt sorry for this person and then I realized that the preacher was talking about me. I tried to speak, tried to tell her I wasn’t dead but I wasn’t in my recliner anymore. I was floating up by the ceiling. There was nothing I could do. I felt so powerless.

Nightmare #198 – Library Out of Time

(Male, 50’s) I don’t know if this qualifies as a nightmare but it was a deeply disturbing dream. I haven’t been in college in decades incidentally.

In the dream, I was in a college library. It was early Saturday morning and there were only a few students, the good students, the ones that were actually studying on the weekend and not sleeping in. I sat at one of the long wooden tables. I had a cloth backpack at my feet, just like the one I used to have many years ago and there were my class books on the table. I was looking through an art book, one of those huge coffee table volumes about some current artist. About this time, I fell asleep in the dream.

When I awoke, it was late in the weekend. It may have been Sunday but it didn’t feel like a Sunday. The students that were around me were the raucous type who’d probably been partying all weekend and now had to cram in some studying before classes started again. The books in front of me had been covered by newspapers like some one had been reading a Sunday paper. I looked for my books underneath them but they were all gone, the text books that I owned as well as the book I had been looking at. At my feet, my backpack had changed to a paper shopping bag filled with junk, literally scavenged junk. I was still disoriented from my nap.

“…At my feet, my backpack had changed to a paper shopping bag filled with junk, literally scavenged junk…”

I figured someone had just re-shelved the books since it appeared I wasn’t using them. I found the art book I was looking at but the name of the artist was actually the name of someone I know in real life, someone who IS an artist. I stumbled over to the line to check this book out. There were two very long lines of noisy students who looked at me oddly. A librarian gestured at me and said she’d open another window for me, even though I wasn’t the next person in line. At this point I realized that I had my daughter with me, though in the dream she was only 4 years old. She’s really grown up and living on her own. I followed the librarian. She went into an office that had a window facing the hallway but the window was about 2 feet off the ground. I had to sit down on the floor to be helped. I told her I wanted to check out that book and she looked at my card and said “This card expired in 1987.” I have no idea why that date would be significant, by the way. I didn’t understand. “Does that mean I can’t check out books?” “No you can’t” “How can I make it work again?” “You can’t” “Can I volunteer, perhaps tutor?” “No, you can’t” “But at least I can still come in the library and use the resources here, right?” “No, you can’t.” By this time the librarian was weeping, just sobbing so I didn’t continue my line of questioning though I still didn’t understand what had happened. I called for my daughter and we started making our way toward the exit. It was strange to be seeing the library for the last time. My daughter asked everyone we passed what time it was.

I awoke horribly disoriented. In fact, I HAD overslept.

Nightmare #197 – Freed from Prison

(Female, 80’s) This was my Mom’s nightmare the other night. She’s just getting over some health problems so that’s what she thought it was about but it’s still a nightmare.

Mom was in jail, actually in a prison far far away from her home. Day after day went by in this horrible place but finally she was told that she would be released and sent home. What they didn’t tell her but what she knew somehow anyway was that she’d be sent home in a box, in a coffin, that’s she’d be dead.

Mom said she woke up in physical pain at least partly brought on by the nightmare.

Nightmare #196 – Monster Hide, Monster Seek

(Male, 40’s) I wrenched my back the other day shoveling snow so I had the worst night of sleep ever. Every time I rolled over, the pain woke me up and as it happened, I always seemed to be in the middle of nightmare.

One of the nightmares involved a game, sort of. There were at least a couple dozen of us, all adults who were playing hide and seek. Sort of. There was a cluster of little buildings, like cottages, I guess, tiny one or two room living spaces with white cotton curtains on the windows. It was night time, fully dark and it seemed like summer, at least there wasn’t snow on the ground. Some of the people were monsters. I would almost call them zombies but they didn’t move particularly slow or strangely. But if they grabbed you, you died. The people who were hiding were very scared. There was a woman with very white blond hair who was particularly scared. She couldn’t seem to move even though it was not a good strategy to stay in one place. I stayed away from the monsters for most of the night. I was trying to make it over to a nearby barn that had a tall concrete silo. For some reason, I thought I’d be safe there. As I crawled out of a window, I was spotted simultaneously by three monsters. I said “Aha, I still have three bullets left.” I made my hand into the shape of a gun (?) and fired at each of the monsters (??) Each one of them stopped and looked down at their chest to see if I had really shot them. They were starting to realize that it was all just a big bluff when I woke up.

Another dream also seemed to involve a barn though in stead of a hay mow, it had bookshelves, like a library with a huge gambrel roof. There was a dragon who was devouring the nearby town. Like in the last dream, I was trying to hide though it seemed easier to hide from a dragon than human sized monsters. Just when I thought I was perfectly safe, the dragon smashed through the stained glass windows … didn’t I mention? The “barn” also had huge stained glass windows like a medieval monastery or something… The dragon smashed through the window and spoke to me and the other people who were hiding with me. Someone yelled “Don’t run. He’ll have to kill you if you run.” as if it was part of the dragon’s code of honor, or something. I didn’t run but I also didn’t jump out of my hiding place either. The dragon was clearly going to burn down the barn if we didn’t surrender to be eaten. I decided to take my chances in the fire when I woke up.

There was another nightmare in there too, I think about a ghost but I can’t remember it very well.

Nightmare # 195 – Shopping Can be Murder

(Female, 40’s) I was shopping in this dream. But I was shopping in the weirdest place I’d ever seen. This “shopping district” was a winding darn alley that looked like a cross between a horror movie set and a Dickens novel. There was a dark and damp, curving pedestrian pathway between these irregularly shaped stores, sitting close together. I swear there were gas lamps.

I went into a shoe store and spent some time trying on shoes. It was like Payless– a self-serve place. I was in the back of the store trying on boots when a man came up behind me and knocked me down, so I was sprawled on my stomach with my arms and legs sticking out. Very graceful. He knelt on my back with one knee and held something sharp against my back. He said, “Don’t move or I’ll have to hurt you.” I said, “Go ahead, you can take all my money.” “Of course I can,” he replied.

I thought about pushing him up and knocking him off my back. And beating him up. I was pretty sure I could do that. But I was worried about the lone clerk in the store, up by the front counter. She might get hurt. So I didn’t do anything. The robber was getting heavy. I kept thinking about what I should do. Then I woke up.

Nightmare #194 – My Aunt’s Wound

(Female, 40’s) This was a dream in two acts.

In the first part of the dream, I was with my natal family in a restaurant for breakfast. We were all very hungry. We sat at a big table in comfy captain’s chairs– my parents, my grown siblings, and I — and ordered breakfast for all of us. Something distracted me and I left the table for a few minutes. When I returned, the table was covered with the remains of a breakfast feast: big baskets, now almost empty of their contents. They were almost Easter-basket sized containers of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, biscuits, and pancakes. My family were still eating like they were starving, but they had nearly emptied the baskets of food. I had to ask and ask for things to be passed to me; they seemed entirely unaware that I had not had anything to eat.

In the second part, I went outside. I was walking down the street, and I ran into one of my old aunts, who I hadn’t seen in a long while. I asked her how she was doing, and she said, “Pretty well, all things considered. Well, I have to see a doctor about this…” She lifted up her shirt and showed me a long, shallow crack in her skin, that ran along the side of her torso– almost like a gash, but just in her skin. “I really don’t know what to make of it,” she explained. Then I noticed that the wound was leaking a very thick white substance, that reminded me of Elmer’s glue. “Wow, I don’t have any idea either,” I said. What the hell was that stuff? White blood cells? Something alien? She coughed and a lot of the white goo oozed out of her. “Yeah, you better see a doctor soon,” I assured her.

Nightmare #193 – Terrorized by Motorcycle Hooligans

(Male, 50’s) In the interests of full disclosure, I should admit that I bought a motorcycle a couple years back in the midst of mid-life crisis and that within the last week as it came time to winterize the thing, I’d been angry with myself that another season had passed and I hadn’t really gotten out on it.

I was with my wife and a female friend and we were crossing a parking lot, heading into a bar when this group of about a dozen motorcycle riders over took us. I started defending the women who were able to get away. This didn’t particularly make the hooligans mad. They just started messing with me instead.

This was a relatively outlandish group of motorcyclists really. Their bikes were all American made and chopped like very classic examples of the style. And by classic I mean original 40’s and 50’s era chopped bikes, simple, basic, with a few bits of chromed flair. And the guys themselves were straight out of a time capsule too, or at least they looked like they were trying to be. They had greased hair with big curls on the top. I bet there’s a word for that. They didn’t wear the bomber style jackets but rather something that looked more like a suit coat jacket that was made out of riding quality leather. They were a riding club – The Rockets – which actually, as I remember it now used to be a local band I really enjoyed back in the 70’s.

The Rockets pushed me around with a detached, ironic sort of torture, like a cat playing with a mouse, that bats it around between its paws. One of them had a package of metal “rockets” that sort of looked like those toys from back in the day that you could put a “cap” in and then toss up in the air and when it landed the cap would go off with a loud pop. Anyway, one of the gang members had a package of these, still on the cardboard like he’d bought it at a retro boutique or something. He took them off the card one by one and shoved them in my mouth til I was choking. I think this was some kind of a test of something to see if I’d choke or vomit. All the while they were laughing and joking while I was trying to keep from suffocating.

Nightmare #192 – Too Curious in the Museum

(Male 20’s) I was in a museum that had living exhibits as well as skeletons and stuffed models. What was weird right off was that I didn’t recognize many of the creatures. It wasn’t just that there was, say, a strangely colored bird but rather there were things that I couldn’t tell was a bird or a… well, I couldn’t tell what they were.

In one of the cages, and by cage I mean in this case a room the size of a ballroom with glass walls probably thirty feet high, there was a “Snape.” Yes, yes, laugh all you want. I realized the Harry Potter reference when I woke up too. But the creature here was maybe thirty five feet long, covered with dappled light and dark green fur — yup, FUR — and a head that looked a bit like a blunt hammer and a bit like a boot. It may have had very thin wiry black legs too but it was hard to see as it moved through the jungle undergrowth of its cage. I was extremely curious to see this creature closer so I pushed up against the glass so hard that some how I pushed my way through the glass. I was inside the cage. A great consternation arose in the crowd outside since the snape was extremely dangerous. Once it started to devour you, there was no escape from a very painful process that lasted for hours and hours. They were organizing some kind of rescue plan for me. All I had to do was stay alive and stay away from the snape until help could arrive. But I wanted to see the snape better. I could hear it circling around me. Once I got a very good view of it as it climbed along the glass wall but it ran away with great speed. I suspected that I was done for.

Nightmare #191 – A Knock in the Night

(Male, 50’s) This nightmare woke me up out of a sound sleep. I swear I was screaming, or at least trying to scream. When I woke up, I could have sworn I had just heard myself yelling out in a small, muffled voice.

In the dream, I’m at home with my wife and my daughter who must be home for the holidays or something. It’s night time and we’re getting ready to head off to bed. We’re all sitting on the couch in the living room, laughing, having a good time. Then there’s a knock on the front door. It’s really late, like the middle of the night and my wife and daughter don’t think we should answer the door. But I thought that someone must be in trouble to knock at the door so late. So I get up and I flip on the porch light to look out and see who was there. And damned if the porch light is out. So I open the door and there’s no one there. I speak out like I’m a tough guy or something and I say “OK step out where I can see you.”

And this huge man steps out of the shadows and with one or two strides, steps into the house. He’s broad and tall, like he’s just been scaled up in all dimensions. He’s got one of those cliched “bad guy” mustaches from the 40’s and he’s we’re a fedora and a trench coat like a black and white movie. He steps easily into the house and reaches out and wraps his hand cleanly around my throat. While he’s grabbing my throat, he lifts me off the ground effortlessly, with a smile. I try to yell, to scream and of course, I’m being choked so not much actual sound comes out.

I woke up trying to scream.

Nightmare #190 – Amateur Surgery

(Male, 40’s) It’s clear where this dream comes from, at least parts of it. My mom has cancer and just came home from the hospital with an IV that needs to be changed twice a day. She’s frail and thin, a nightmare in her own right, more like a skeleton or a zombie than the vibrant and energetic woman of her younger days. Her hair is wispy and thin.

Regardless, the nightmare starts like this: Mom and I have traveled far north to a city on the banks of a Great Lake. The beach isn’t made of sand but rather is black grit. There are also moderately large outcroppings of white quartz crystal. Mom is able to walk and we’re walking along the beach, though she needs my arm for support. There is a deep dark forest of ever greens — cedars, I believe, just like we had along one side of the house where I grew up. We reached this boardwalk which made walking much easier. It lead to a train station and we took a subway to a hospital. I got Mom situated in a hospital room but it was a strange feel to the room. She shared the room with two other people. One was asleep or anesthetized. The other was a small child whose mother was complaining loudly that there was a Bible in the room. I told her to shut the f*** up and she seemed equally horrified by cursing as she was by the presence of a Bible. But she quieted down enough for me to get to work.

I was to perform surgery on Mom. It was all that her insurance would pay for, I gather. She sat down in something that looked like a dentist’s chair. It had trays filled with shiny scalpels. I gather there was a tumor somewhere in Mom’s abdomen that was so close to the surface it was supposed to be a simple task. This would be outpatient surgery, though my sense is that was the only kind of surgery performed at this do-it-yourself clinic. I opened a little moist towelette, like the kind you get at fast food fried chicken places and swabbed down Mom’s belly. I gather that was supposed to sterilize the area. I didn’t feel any growth beneath the surface, just soft, almost gooey, formless skin. I picked up a scalpel and I tried to make myself make an incision but I didn’t know where I was supposed to be cutting or what I was supposed to be looking for. I told Mom to wait there and I’d ask at the desk.

The nurses’ desk at the end of the hall had a couple nurses entering information into computers and chatting amiably amongst themselves. They were dismissive of my concerns. “Go ahead. You’ll do fine. We’re right here if you need us.” Though it didn’t seem they’d be much help. They didn’t encourage me in the least. I returned to Mother’s room, or at least what I thought was Mother’s room but she wasn’t there. There were no patients in that room. I tried to make my way back to the nurses’ desk but I couldn’t find that either. (As I’m writing this down, I realize of course that in the nightmare, I “lost” my mother.) I tried retracing my footsteps all the way back to the train station. There was someone just ahead of me, ducking around corners, moving too quickly for me to get a good look at, but I knew that this person would be able to help me. I was never able to catch up with him.

Nightmare #189 – Falling

(Male, 40’s) Strange dream, almost like it was someone else’s dream or a dream that was mine when I was much younger. Or something. I woke up from it at 3:00 in the morning and had absolutely no interest in going back to sleep afterward.

We were in my Grandmother’s house which didn’t belong to my Grandmother anymore, which is probably obvious because she’s dead. But the family continued to rent the house from the Man who owned it now. He was doing all sorts of really drastic renovations on the place. Like the back room was now going to be the kitchen and he had put in this oddly shaped kitchen island in there. I was trying to convince someone that this was actually a good thing, that it would come in handy for when we entertained. But in the dream, I knew that we’d never entertain here, that we’d never invite anyone over here.

And then the Man showed us the new ceiling he was putting onto this huge addition. Honestly the addition was larger than a basketball court and easily as tall. We were walking along the drop ceiling above it. It was constructed of long metal slats that bowed under our weight as we walked with large piece of corrugated cardboard in between. There was some trick to walking up there, to making yourself not weigh your normal weight. Like positive thoughts or something would make you float or something. The other people had no problem with this but I kept having doubts about whether this whole thing would work. My foot got caught between the slats and the cardboard and my foot slipped between. My leg was dangling into the vast cavernous basketball court beneath. It was brightly lit up as if for a game. I knew it was just an instant before my whole body slipped through. My mom started moving closer to me to try to save me. She was younger, much younger, probably 40 years younger than she is now. And I was younger too, just a child. I was swooning with vertigo but I knew that if I pulled that piece of cardboard out with me, it would de-stabilize a whole area of the ceiling. I told mom to back up, to get away from me. Just then the cardboard gave out and started falling. I held onto the edges of the cardboard like a magic carpet. It just plummeted down and down. I fell much further than I could have ever imagined, much farther than the floor. I was hopeful that I would survive the fall but the trouble was I never landed. Just a constant never ending fall. I was dizzy and nauseous and afraid.

Nightmare #188 – Bubble People

(Male, 40’s) This was pretty much a standard work dream except for the twist at the end. I was at work, though of course the building didn’t resemble the actual building where I work in the least. The dream building was a very tall structure of relatively short hallways, maybe 30 feet long. And by tall I mean absurdly tall, 30 plus stories so tall that is slightly swayed in the wind. The only way to get up and down this long tall building was to use the freight elevator that was on one end of this short hallway. It was a standard freigh elevator, extremely noisy, wide open and quite slow moving. So that was the NORMAL situation.

The NIGHTMARE part of the dream started when we had to evacuate the building quickly. I think it had something to do with zombies but at least within the part of the dream that I remember there were no actual zombies. However, there were people from the upper floors who were somehow flooding down to our floor to use the elevator, I guess. There was something wrong about them. They weren’t zombies and they weren’t even the threat we knew we were supposed to be avoiding. They were smiling broadly and dressed in normal business suits. Except they weren’t walking; they were floating down the hallway toward me. As they approached it became obvious that they weren’t human but they were actually BALLOONS, like balloon animals tied in the shape of humans. They floated with their menacing smiles. I picked up a broom and tried to keep them from touching any of my co-workers as they tried to escape onto the elevator. For some reason, I knew that if the balloon people touched you, their balloon skin would stick to you and you’d be done for. One by one, more of them would stick to you and… well, I didn’t know exactly what would happen but I knew you’d stop being human and you’d end up being like them. Lucky for me it was rather easy to keep them away with the broom because they were so light. However more and more of them kept pushing into the hallway.

I awoke feeling very anxious, uncertain whether I’d saved anyone at all.

Nightmare #187 – Horror Hor D’oeurves

(Female, 40’s) A couple friends stopped by our house unannounced, and we suddenly decided to have a party and invite some more people over. Then we needed to come up with lots of snacks so I went to our freezer, which in the dream was a huge walk-in freezer, and there were all kinds of things in there, like laid-in provisions, packages of frozen meats and a whole stack of frozen waffles. But I was looking for some kind of snack food, like a frozen pizza. I thought I might have had a container of frozen shrimp or oysters — although I have no idea why I thought I’d find those in my freezer!– or barbecued spareribs, something just small and tasty.

But all I could find as snack food was a package of marinated miniature vampire monkey brains! It had a little picture of a vampire monkey on the front! It was like a brand-name package, too, not some sketchy thing. I took them out of the package and they were frozen in kind of a flat sheet. I could see all their little vampire teeth because their mouths were open. But I wanted to make sure that there was enough for every one so I cut them in half! With one good chop along the jaw line.

And then I put them in a pan on the stove and started stirring them. And in the dream I had a sense of both satisfaction because I’d found a snack for everyone as well as revulsion, like “Yuck, I don’t want to eat these things!”

Nightmare #171 – College Monster

(Male, 20’s) Yeah so this nightmare is pretty obviously about going back to college — that horror that summer is almost over but it’s still pretty weird.

I was moving back into college and I had all these things on my mind like I had only moved in half my stuff out of the car into the dorm room when someone told me that I should run over and buy my books before the lines got too long. On the way, I saw some friends that I hadn’t seen all summer and was glad to see again but still I was in a hurry. So I was racing toward the main college building — which didn’t look like any of the buildings on my campus but more like one of those old stone buildings like in England at Oxford or Cambridge. Soaring arches and stained glass windows. This building was where all the classes and administration happened for the college. It was THE college. I know is strange to say but it sort of had the feel of my middle school, maybe the same general layout of building and grounds, though in the dream everything that was parking lot at my middle school was very well groomed lawn. I had just come out from a tree lined street — just like there was at my middle school — and I noticed this because the sun now was very hot and very, very bright. There were people hurrying here and there with their arms wrapped around large stacks of books. And no one really seemed to notice that there was a dinosaur sized monster as tall as the tallest spire of the college biting at people here and there. The monster was unbelievable, really unbelievable. It was just like an old monster movie monster. It had three heads and frills behind each head. I looked up at it and thought — I REALLY thought this — that having three heads couldn’t possible serve an evolutionary purpose so therefore this creature must be imaginary. Except it was moving and with such fluid motion. It wasn’t stop action animation or anything. It just was a real, 50′ tall green lizard. By that time it had noticed me and even though I still didn’t believe it existed, I sort of hid behind one corner of the building. But it darted its heads around the top of the building and hissed at me so I tried moving again. What’s funny, I guess, is that I wasn’t really *afraid* of the monster, even though it was trying to bite me in two but more I felt *irritated* with the monster because it was getting in the way of the tasks I had to do. Anyway, this back and forth thing went on for several minutes with me never getting very safe for very long. Right about then I woke up.

Nightmare #170 – Cleaning out the Ghost

(Male, 30’s) This nightmare had a steady feeling of dread throughout it. It was late afternoon and I was in my grandmother’s house. Incidentally, my grandmother has been dead for decades and I haven’t been in this house since I was a kid. The house was abandoned and I was the only one there. One of the rooms upstairs, a bedroom, was noisily haunted. When I was downstairs in the hallway, I could hear a vacuum running up there. I ran up the stairs and just as I entered the room the vacuum cleaner switched off. The floor was filthy with dust so it was clear to see where the vacuum had just been gliding along, cleaning the floor. There was still furniture in this room which was strange because most of the house was empty. I knew in the dream that something in the room was causing the haunting, that one of the pieces of furniture or something hidden in a drawer was something the ghost wanted someone to find. I started taking things apart, making a mess. I was working against time because I knew that I really REALLY didn’t want to be caught in the house after sunset. One of the pieces of furniture was a chest of drawers. There appears to be only clothes in it. Then I looked at the dresser from behind and I found that there were secret panels behind each of the drawers. In one of them I found a small package of hand-rolled cigarettes, though for some reason I knew that it wasn’t tobacco. This dresser must have belonged to the teenaged girl who lived here. The drawer itself was filled with wildly colored sashes and silk hair ties. The cigarettes — drugs? — were a discovery but it didn’t seem to be the kind of thing a ghost wanted me to find. I had to leave the room for a moment and when I came back in, the contents of one of the dresser drawers that I had spilled out was all tidied up. The ghost was cleaning up after this messy human. Or maybe it was that the ghost really DIDN’T want me to find out about what was causing the haunting. It was getting dark. I was running out of time.

Nightmare #169 – Dinosaur Bank Robbery

(Male, 40’s) I didn’t believe a nightmare could be hilarious as well as terrifying — though I should admit that I was pretty scared while I was actually inside the dream. It’s only when I woke up and started thinking about it did any of it seem funny. But it is kind of funny, like a B-movie thriller.

I was one of four people performing an extremely large scale bank heist. Basically we were going to cause a natural disaster which would force a whole town to evacuate and then we’d rob a pre-selected set of banks and burn down everything else. Not a subtle plan but it gets points for audacity. The disaster we had planned involved flooding the city by draining a dammed reservoir. That part worked fine, sort of. The water left the reservoir and started flooding down the river toward the city. It must have taken quite a bit of time because the city was largely evacuated before the water got to it. But there was trouble back at the reservoir. When all the water disappeared, all that was left was all the wildlife that lived in the water — and an improbable collection of creatures was that: fish flapping for breath, thousands upon thousands of frogs, a good half dozen alligators … and an immense amphibious dinosaur. I believe it was a moasaur. We had just finished our work at the dam and each of the four of us were carrying a large satchel of hand grenades, gasoline “molotov cocktails” and C4 explosives. In the dream, though I don’t remember any of us carrying a lighter or a detonator or anything — these things were just supposed to go “boom” on their own free will or something. I saw the moasaur as it was eating two alligators. Yup, that was quite a sight! I tried to warn the others but one of the conspirators shrugged me off “Haven’t you ever seen an alligator before?” He tossed a hand grenade in the direction of the fuss and we all made our way toward the city. There was devastation everywhere, uprooted trees, overturned cars… somehow there were still people running away from the water even though the water had already torn through town. The ground was soggy, like after a rain but there were no pools of water. We ran across an open field behind some houses. I had the distinct feeling that the dinosaur was following us but then I looked around and saw that the situation was even worse. There were at least three of these same dinosaurs crawling out among the houses, casually eating stragglers. Again I tried to alert my conspirators and again they said “Stop daydreaming. Keep your mind on the task” while they casually tossed a couple firebombs over their shoulder. I think the plan was to burn down the city so the loss of the money wouldn’t be noticed. The next thing I knew one of the dinosaurs had grabbed one of the robbers in its mouth. He was shocked and surprised. That’s when Jodi Foster… did I mention that one of the robbers was Jodi Foster? It was really strange because throughout the dream I wanted to compliment her on her acting work but she was very serious and very focused on the robbery and I thought she’d just yell at me again. It seemed that Jodi Foster was the brains of the operation. The whole thing might have been her plan, too. She tossed a hand grenade at the moasaur that was now chewing on one of our companions and she told the rest of us to hurry. We’d made it to the outskirts of the city — why hadn’t we planned to have a vehicle, especially if we were going to be carrying loot? — but we were blocked off from it by an immensely tall chain link fence. The fence was easily three stories tall and it had barbed wire at the top. I took off climbing as soon as we got to it. I knew there were more than one dinosaur out there and I wanted to get as far away from them as possible. When I got to the top, I wrapped my leather jacket around the barbed wire and climbed over it. Climbing down was the hard part. I could see the dinosaurs massing in the field we’d just left. The other guy was refusing to climb the fence while Jodi Foster was sure taking her time. I knew I needed her if for no other reason than I didn’t know where we were supposed to go next. I mean she’s a great actress but it was getting down to every one for them self. She had gotten roughly half the way up the fence and I had gotten rough half the way down. I was yelling at her to hurry when the dinosaur attacked the guy on the ground. When I say attacked, I really mean more he just bit the guy in half. The dinosaurs were roughly the size of a garbage truck. I jumped the rest of the way down. There were dozens of people still running around, still trying to escape the flood that had already passed through town. Now they had something worse to worry about. I opened up my satchel of explosives and told people to take them, not that the bombs had shown themselves to be very effective against the monsters in the past. The dinosaur went for the fence and effortlessly toppled it down. There was nothing standing in the way between it and me. It was huge, black and green, sleek skin, squat like an extremely large and extremely angry frog, though its back legs weren’t that big. It had cold, unthinking eyes and breath that smelled like a damp basement. I was done for.

Nightmare #168 – The Haunted Booth

(Male, 40’s) This doesn’t sound scary at all in the light of day but I woke up terrified, entirely unable to get back to sleep after this dream.

I was in the house where I grew up, a place I haven’t been in years. I’m an adult in the dream though. It’s the middle of the night and I’m walking down the short hallway by the bedroom I had when I was in grade school. I hear this rhythmic squeaking, like someone is jumping up and down on a spring. I decide to investigate. At first I think it’s just the dog. We had a dog when I was a kid but it was small and furry. The dog in my dream was huge with very short hair. I thought maybe it was wagging it’s tail in such a way that it was hitting something. But the dog was no where to be found. It was hiding — I thought maybe I should be too. The squeak got louder as I turned the corner by the kitchen. It was coming from the kitchen. I entered and flipped on the lights but there was no one in there. The noise continued, regularly squeaking, louder because I was finally in the same room with it but not changing in frequency. It was coming from the cushions of the built-in booth. I pushed the table away. The booth had the same patterned material that it did when I was a very little kid, probably early grade school. But in the place where I used to sit, there was a huge black stain. It wasn’t like something had soaked into the material but more like something had melted or dissolved on top of the booth and there was now this dried puddle of black residue. The sound was coming from there, like a small child jumping up and down on the seat cushion.

In my dreams, I’m always an exorcist for some reason, and I think I can command the demon to leave us alone. It didn’t feel like a ghost — though I wonder why not. It just seemed too large and powerful… and too difficult to understand to be a ghost. I tried to say “In the name of Jesus Christ, leave us alone” but my mouth didn’t work right. I couldn’t pronounce whole words only stray syllables. My lips seemed to melt together. My tongue was numb but I kept trying. I struck the black spot with my hand as I tried again and again to make it stop. I was on my knees hitting this demonic booth when I woke up.

Nightmare #167 – The Snowy Dark

(Male, 30’s) The first strange thing about this nightmare is that it’s about winter and and being cold and right now, it’s July and I’m anything but cold. The second thing that’s strange is that I didn’t realize it was a nightmare or really even a dream when it first started.

It was winter, a gray overcast day, rather late in the day because nothing was very bright. There was a good cover of snow on the ground, though it wasn’t fresh because the roads were well traveled. I was in a rural area, not a farmer’s field because it was more rustic. There was brown scrub poking up out of the snow in places, brush and a enough clumps of trees that I couldn’t see the horizon. There was no one with me but I didn’t get the sense that I was alone. Maybe I heard voices of other people yelling to each other. At this point, I thought it was just folks having fun in the snow like I was. I was beside a gravel road. It hadn’t been plowed but there were several sets of tracks. During this part of the dream I wasn’t afraid at all. It was rather fun to be outside with the fresh crisp air.

I had cross country skiis on. I haven’t been cross country skiing since I was a kid but it was something I really liked to do back then. I looked both ways and crossed the road to a slightly more open area. I began gliding along in that peaceful rhythm of skiing. Then I angled slightly to pass through a small area of underground and cross into a more open area. At this point I realized that the voices I’d heard were people looking for me. I don’t have a sense that they wanted to do me harm but still for whatever reason I didn’t want to be found. I kept pressing on, not entirely sure of where I was going. The undergrowth seemed a lot thicker that I expected, thicker and more difficult to traverse. But I paid most attention to the voices that were behind me. I was able to get a bit of speed going despite the brush. I was pushing forward, forward, forward and then I looked up and saw this terrifying patch of darkness. I suppose it was shaped like a bush but it was nothingness, just an ominous hole. The tips of my skiis were already gliding into it. There was no way to avoid it but it was clearly not something that belonged to this nice rustic winter scene. I decided in an instant to be brave so with my heart pounding I ducked and slid into the dark.
